Carmilla …more I liked it – Gothic castle in Styria, mix of authentic vampire folklore – Carmilla is not pale nor burn in the sun – and Gothic romanticism. The General carimlla supposed to bring his niece, Bertha Rheinfeldt, to visit the two, but the niece suddenly died under mysterious circumstances.
The beast then takes the form of a female figure and disappears through the door without opening it. Her secrecy is not the only mysterious thing about Carmilla; she never joins the household in its prayers, she sleeps much of the day, and she seems to sleepwalk outside at night.

While the author’s diction is Victorian, the book is a short, quick read unlike the massive tomes that some 19th-century novels areso it shouldn’t be daunting even for readers who have a problem with old-fashioned prose.
